Vanderocker Releases New Psychedelic Indie EP “The Good Punk”

Alternative, Funk, Indie, Rock

“In my mind, it’s a basic study of humans on different levels, almost from an Alien National Geographic kind of perspective. Here is Earth, a most beautiful place and here are the alluring creatures who call themselves human beings. Let’s observe them when they are just in their bodies. Now look how they change when they interact with other groups’ – like a typical lab observation, right? Which is interesting in itself; but then of course, we have to look at how amazingly powerful humans can be when they disengage from the drama and plug into something bigger than themselves. I find comfort in all of it, when I can step back and observe us the way a newcomer might.”

Vanderocker

Writer, guitarist, bassist and synth player across the new EP, Adrienne Vanderocker collaborates with producer Brandon Eggleston and several noteworthy guest artists such as Federico Pol Jr (Joe Cocker), Peter Holmström (The Dandy Warhols, PIA), and Brendan Bond (Black Pumas) in her new psychedelic EP ”The Good Punk.”

This includes four new tracks (as well as a bonus instrumental) which take the listener on a whole journey of genres from psych to electro pop, touching themes on sex, voyeurism and duality, which solidifies Vanderocker’s role as one of the most exciting recent alternative indie acts.

Among this EP, we are essentially taken on a journey of the human experience and our own battles with desire in our lives. This is highlighted in the track ”Cult for you.” Described as ‘earthly pleasure’ by the artist, the ambience and echos within the song take you on a lesson on the basics of human desire in the most spiritual form possible.

We are then taken into ‘‘Endless City” which brings the human experience out of the singular and into the city at night. It paints a picture of an environment full of the highest highs and the lowest lows, where people become ”lock boxes for sins, secrets, or resilience, or heroism, and they also become the most open, revealing, expressions of themselves on the flip of a dime.” This Endless City is also the place to get mind altering substances which keep us in a state of euphoria. It is emphasised that people on the outside wouldn’t get it, but those experiencing it would get it the most.

“Taking Notes” almost makes you feel like you are at school again. Here, Vanderocker takes a different route with a ”deep funky groove” explaining how as humans we have to push ourselves to almost reach our potential.

I was setting up a kind of 70’s vibe as the foundation and Pete ended up putting some really cool guitar work, creating this brilliant soundscape over the piece. In case anyone wanted to enjoy this piece without the narrative, we included a bonus instrumental on the EP”

Vanderocker

Finally, the psychedelic journey ends with the track ”Supercell.” Vanderocker describes the tune as something which ”takes a look at how powerful humans are when they come together for a cause. Of course, it particularly speaks to all the unrest and upset around the massive corruption and ongoing systemic racism.

Vanderocker explains that when writing she ”was just thinking about that superpower gene that kicks in when change happens.” When she found out what a supercell was, she says the track ”couldn’t have been more perfect.”

MeMe Detroit Return as “Mean Rock n Rollers” in New Single

Rock, Rock n Roll, Singer-Songwriter

MeMe Detroit’s new single brings about the classic sounds and angry vibes that you would typically get in an archetypal ‘Rock n Roll’ song.

Describing it as a ”Calling” and a ”Deep Lifestyle” within the lyrics, ‘Mean Rock n Roller’ was written as an anthem to anyone who feels pressurised to adapt and conform to societal ideals.

Mean Rock N Roller is a bit of a tongue-in-cheek song that we had written as a bit of fun but at the same time says ‘fuck you’ to the limiting beliefs that are pressed on us by society as we grow up. You can basically be, do or have anything you want in life when you put your mind to it, so never settle. It’s pointless”.

Mean Rock n Roller can be streamed below:

They are currently rallying their fans to help put together a music video, whilst keeping them entertained with a constant supply of new music via exclusive streams on social media.

MeMe Detroit continue to gain traction within the UK music scene as they have managed to land regular airtime on Kerrang! Radio, Janice Long’s show on BBC Radio Wales and have been picked for Fresh on the Net’s ‘Fresh Faves.’

Meet Your New Favourite Folk-Punk Artist: Jay Thackery

Folk, Punk, Rock n Roll

Feeling angsty yet sensitive? Need to look else where to get you punk-folk fix after you released that Frank Turner stopped releasing decent music and became kind of a knob? Well look no further because we’ve found just the guy to fill that particular hole in your life: Jay Thackery.

His debut EP is a gold-mine of story-led folk-punk ballads rooted in personal experience. Indeed, ‘The Rehab Diaries’ isn’t just attempt to make the artist sound edgy and tortured: the album was literally written and recorded during Thackery’s second stint in rehab for various  substance abuse issues. He refers to the EP as a ‘perfect snapshot of that period in his life’, which encapsulates the almost memoir-like quality that the record has: it is introspective, reflective and cathartic.

The sound, at its core, is folky. Jay Thackery has a one-man-band vibe going on, with his use of an acoustic guitar and bass-drum adding to the rough-and-ready production value that amplifies the emotive quality of his music. Manufactured pop-punk this is not. Coupled with elements from classic rock’n’roll, bluegrass and punk- all genres that traditionally have had a large grassroots scenes—his music is nothing if not authentic.

There is also a smattering of rap in songs such as ‘Don’t Cry’ and ‘The Fall’, in which Thackery shows off some of his best lines, and is reminiscent of a younger Ed Sheeran, before he became the unofficial mascot of Heart Radio. We only hope that his upcoming releases contain more spoken word segments, as we feel that this shows Jay at his most inventive.

Quitters May Be Their Own Worst Enemy But They’re Certainly Not Ours

Punk

French punk-rock band Quitters release new single ‘My Own Worst Enemy’ ahead of the release of their second EP Singing Like Nobody’s Listening in January 2019.

‘My Own Worst Enemy’ is an upbeat and positive offering. The message is one of empowerment and Quitters note that most of the difficulties that people experience arise from the way they deal with problems as opposed to the problems themselves. As the band explains, you can be disenchanted, frustrated, lost, hopeless but at the same time realize that there are so many positive things in this world. It’s all about choice, about making the decision to pursue these things as long as you can.

Quitters are a Punk Rock indie quartet formed in 2015 in Montpellier After a few dates in France, the band releases their first EP entitled Move On to Honest Things in May 2015 on four European labels (Krod Records, Bad Mood Asso, Inhumano and Dingleberry Records). Then follows several tours that will take them to Chile, Portugal, Spain, Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, Belgium, Switzerland…

In 2017, the debut album Good Night Memories released on eight independent European labels including Inhumano, Bad Mood Asso and Dingleberry Records. With the same desire to defend independent culture and Do It Yourself. This year also marks the arrival of Roma in the group and the resumption of tours in England, Europe and the USA.

In January 2019, the second EP Singing Like Nobody’s Listening will be released.

These are the first songs composed with Romain on drums. They were made between Montpellier and Grenoble. Rom living 300 km from Antho, Jerem and Dookie, the exercise was to ping-pong the songs without ever repeating until a satisfactory result was achieved.

The ep was recorded in June 2018 with RomTom Cat and is called Singing Like Nobody’s Listening.

Punk Band Healthy Junkies Set To Release Dynamic New Single And Album

Punk, Rock, Rock n Roll

Healthy Junkies are an antidote to a generation that’s numbed by televised talent shows by reviving the punk ethos of a time when Johnny Rotten walked down Kings Road with safety pins in his ear.

Their attitude and musical purity have earned them respect from some of their heroes such as Knox of The Vibrators, Charlie Harper of the UK Subs or Strokes producer Gordon Raphael with whom they have collaborated in the past. Describing the upcoming album ‘Box Of Chaos’, out on 20th February 2016, in their own words as a “journey which starts with a party that quickly turns to anger and dysfunction”, it is a punk statement that celebrates the values of liberty and standing up for yourself, especially in the wake of the recent terror attacks in Paris and the often imprisoning nature of a modern capitalist society. Their single ‘Watch Out’, out on 15th December 2015, paints a picture of our time in which public surveillance and dependence on technology have taken over our lives.

Formed in 2010 by UK born guitarist and singer Phil Honey-Jones and French singer Nina Courson, Healthy Junkies have established themselves in the punk scene after playing with bands such as The Damned, The Boomtown Rats, UK Subs, Walter Lure (former Heartbreakers), The Vibrators or TV Smith of The Adverts, to name a few. Over the last four years they were regular acts at Rebellion punk festival in Blackpool and have been played on various radio stations, such as TBFM which voted one of the songs on the album, ‘Danny Trash’, to number one a few weeks ago. Songwriters Nina and Phil are taking inspiration for their lyrics from everyday life, including the struggles that arise when a crazy rock’n’roll lifestyle gets to the point of mental instability and destructive behaviour. Channelling such impulses through creativity and making music is what the band uses as therapy.

Nina and Phil home 3

Healthy Junkies’ music thrives from a mixture of often distressing life experiences and musical proficiency. Lyricist Nina has been forced to live under harsh conditions from an early age after she left home at the age of 14 and ended up living with a Muslim transvestite in Paris’ red light district Montmartre, eventually falling into the abyss of drug consumption in the realm of shady characters. Meeting Phil in 2008 has turned her life around and she started focussing her energy on creating music. As a band they have also started promoting their own regular club night called Punk’n’Roll Rendevouz at a venue in Camden which has been going for over three years now. It has been a meeting place for the UK’s underground scene ever since.

Phil started to play cello at the age of six before he moved onto guitar and discovered punk rock. His previous band Nurotica has been acknowledged by influential DJs ranging from John Peel to Rodney Bingenheimer. Personal experiences play an important part of the Healthy Junkies’ songs. The new album is especially a diary of the last two years on the road – some of the tracks were literally made up on stage. It is a document of emotional stories as well as an observation of the times we live in wrapped up in a dynamic rock’n’roll sound that touches upon influences from bands such as Nirvana, The Sex Pistols, Blondie or Elastica.

The single ‘Watch Out’ is out on 15th December 2015, the album ‘Box Of Chaos’ is out on 20th February 2016.

Pale Green Things – the next big thing for Brit-Pop?

Uncategorized

Multi-instrumentalist set to release eponymous debut EP in January 2014

With plans to become a 21st century one-man band entitled ‘Pale Green Things’, Jack Traynor has revealed plans to provide audiences with a unique performance experience, using a fusion of live instruments, djing equipment and analogue effects.

Jack has an impressive performance history, supporting acts such as ‘The Riffles’, ‘Dave Mcpherson’, ‘The Coral’ (at Noel Gallaghers after show party) and ‘Dirty Sanchez’. He has also played several times alongside ‘The Virginmarys’, an exceedingly popular band in the US.

Jack’s personal interests have obviously inspired his song-writing on his EP, those being a love of the Icelandic language, global population and world history. Blending a fusion of indie/punk with brit-pop, with lyrics depicting his interest in geography and global-warming, Jack certainly has a knack for captivating his audience.

His song ‘Captain Planet’ is the lead song on the EP, and the incredibly catchy chorus has a very similar sound to ‘The Wombats’. It is based around a relationship going south, whilst also being a fun tribute to the TV show Captain Planet. Jack says he alludes to this because “it had a hippy mentality for kids all over the world, uniting to beat global warming/pollution”. You can watch the energetic music video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Uvyt-a25d4

Pale Green Things new EP will be released 20th January 2014, and will be accompanied by several gigs with several still to be announced.

Upcoming gigs:

25th January- Castle Rock, Alderly Edge

22nd March- The Kings Arms, Manchester

Quickly building a reputation for themselves through their work ethic and constant gigging, The Retrospectives are a Sheffield based punk rock trio with bags of energy.

Now at the forefront of Sheffield’s vibrant music scene, The Retrospectives have been named by Q Magazine as one of the top 5 bands to watch in the city. Having supported Bruce Foxton (The Jam) during a recent tour, their live schedule for the rest of the year sees them play with The Boomtown Rats, accompany The Last Carnival on their UK tour and play a string of acoustic dates with indie folk pop band My First Tooth.
