The Fabulous Red Diesel Set To Please Fans With New EP ”The Queensbury House Sessions.”

Jazz, Singer-Songwriter, Soul

Beyond the theatrics of make-up that’s just a little extra; peacock-feather ‘n’ tie dye shirts and a rainbow emitting disco ball lies a voice with the call of the sirens and a hot handle on the blues”

Debbie Bourke, Jazz Journalist

A Husband and Wife on drums, a transgender trumpeter and double-bassist; a synth player and a guitarist named Rabbi Jaffa Delicious. Different? Yes. Unconventional? Yes. Good Music? Absolutely!

Ms Kitty (Kat Lee-Ryan),  Duke Boom (Will Lee-Ryan) on drums; Miss Bea-Have (Beatrice Gullick) and Rabbi Jaffa Delicious (Simon Dobell) have built a loyal fanbase through the fusion classic 60s soul with jazz arrangements and a rhythm section which can skip from hip-hop beats to Latin to funk.

The band shouldn’t be underestimated either as they have worked with the likes of The James Taylor Quartet, Skunk Anansie and Jeff Buckley. Their new EP – a sixteen track project – was recorded in just one take at a disused office block, un-ironically called the Queensbury House.

The record’s lead single ‘Butterfly Mind’ is a beautiful mix of smokey jazz and swooning soul, and a real testament to true love.

It’s about the way my brain works and the way music flits from one person to another, changing their perception (hopefully for the better) by tiny inspirational touches. And then it’s also a love song – I am married to the drummer and I’m saying no matter how many twists and turns and expansions my mind has, I am always grounded in him – you know I’ve got a butterfly mind but I settle on you ‘’

Kat Lee-Ryan

Any Listener can be pleasantly surprised by the music video accompanying this track. Based in a live studio, visuals set the scene with beautiful strobe lights and colours, certain to put anyone in a tranquil mood. As well as soothing vocals, the butterflies flying across the screen are a nice touch bringing it all together.

Yo Will Make You ‘Shake It’ With New Single!

Music, Soul

Post-punk indie single set to hit on June 15th

Capture

Currently based in New Orleans – the birthplace of soul and jazz – Yo are a rock band not afraid to go against the grain. After travelling the globe and making homes in various corners of the USA and Europe, the music and songwriting draws upon a wealth of inspirations and tales from the road.

The single is taken from the album ‘Vagrancy’, an LP which shows perfectly the versatile nature of Yo’s songwriting. Songs such as ‘Shake It’ are seemingly bold for the high energy of live performance, but other tracks on the album suit different environments. Whether relaxing out at a festival, going for it on a club dancefloor, jumping around at a live gig or relaxing in a local pub, there will be a song on this album which slots in brilliant to every situation.

Altogether, it makes for a jazzy cocktail which is tough to pigeonhole, sewn together by the originality of vocalist Andre’s delivery.

Single ‘Shake It’ will be available from June 15th.

Scarlett Baxter, Soul singer releases debut single!

Soul

Scarlet Baxter looks to break through with August 18th single release

A London based artist with a fiercely independent streak, Scarlet Baxter is a female singer-songwriter who has been described as ‘Lauren Hill meets Jimi Hendrix’. A killer combination of stellar vocals and soulful guitar backing thanks to co-writer Dominic Ireland, Scarlet Baxter is an artist with a genuine chance of breaking through having turned the heads of some the industry’s top names.

With a new EP ‘Stuck’ due for release soon, lead single ‘Backsliding’ is a classy introduction to Scarlet’s powerful sound. Having worked on the EP with producers including John McLaughlin (known as ‘The Hit Man’ thanks to previous successes), Jud Mahoney (Michael Jackson, Dolly Parton, Chris Brown, Usher, Mariah Carey) and Natalie DeLucia (Britney Spears), this is music not only well written but also superbly captured by a team of industry heavyweights.

Scarlet Baxter is no stranger to the spotlight since winning performance contests as young as 14 years of age. Later, she went through years of musical theatre training and, although the musical theatre is not reflected in her earthy style, she did learn the art of performance and gain confidence in her own ability.

More recently, her star has continued to rise thanks to numerous support slots with Lester Clayton as well as playing Barfly, Camden with Stax Revue. It’s little wonder her music has featured on London’s BBC Introducing with Gavin Crowley, with The Stage and Television Today also marking the talented songwriter as ‘One to Watch’.

London Born musician, Lateefah is a neo soul artist who after returning to the UK from her parent’s native country of St Lucia, is now working on further developing her gift for making music. Her new single releasing this year, will hope to demonstrate the talent and efforts of this young neo soul artist.

The cool Caribbean Artist started out singing in church at a young age, and gathers a lot of the inspiration for her work, from her own personal diaries from her childhood. Adapting these written records of her past, Lateefah has been able to create moving and soulful songs that entertain and educate her listeners about her colorful past.

Lateefah developed her passion for singing from early on as 3 years of age! Her earliest memory of being driven by the art, was trying to hit the right notes in the song “The Lord is my Shepherd”. Rehearsing relentlessly, until she hit it with pitch perfect precision. After that success and a great deal of extra practice, the music industry became a second home for the young superstar. The music blood has been in Lateefah’s family since her father founded the 70’s Reggae band, Cygnus.

Christian hip-hop duo Go2 to release new single ‘Nothin On You’

Uncategorized

Go2-Hi-Res1Go2 (Lerish and Vizun, aka. Rick and Dale) combine hip-hop with Christian praise and worship to create a powerful musical outfit. Go2 caught the attention of the rights campaigner and political leader Jesse Jackson, and shortly thereafter they were requested to come and perform in Chicago at the Rainbow PUSH Coalition Headquarters run by Jackson and in support of civil rights and social justice.  They have been building a large support base since then: they were nominated for Best Holy Hip Hop Artist at 2009 Gospel Choice Awards, have topped the Christian charts and have even shared a stage with Ludacris.

The duo met in church where Rick was a worship leader and Dale was a minister in training and sound engineer. They formed a friendship out of the mutual ambition to make hip-hop primarily but also because their faith was so important to them and music felt like a great way of expressing their feelings towards God and the ones they loved. Go2 believe that Jesus has blessed them with an ability to make unique music, which can help to spread their message.

About “Nothin On You”

I wrote this song with a very simple message in mind, nothing can nor should take the place of God in your life. I didn’t write this song to be against having fun or any of that, I wrote it because I myself had let things like money, houses, career and other materialistic things become more important to me than God. The first verse of this song is about a guy who came to a cross road in his life, in a night club, and realized that the things that he looked for to bring him joy no longer worked. He needed something more. I feel this song is very relatable because I think we’ve all had that eye opening point in our lives where we said, “there’s got to be more to life than this. “  This song has a very danceable beat; it reminds me of the famous line-dance style culture. Some songs that were very popular in this same vein are The Macarena, The Cha-Cha slide, The Wobble, The Cupid Shuffle and
The Electric Slide.  What sets this song apart from the pack is the universal, relatable message embedded in this urban contemporary hit.

Ben Okafor: The Voice of Social Change?

Uncategorized

Ben Okafor is a unique musician who makes roots reggae music and bridges an artistic gap between Jamaican reggae, Afro-pop and UK folk. He has shared a stage with popular music giants like Cliff Richard, Van Morrison and Billy Bragg and has been touring and making new music since 1985.

Image

Perhaps the most pertinent thing about Ben’s music is his political focus and drive for social change. He was born in Enugu in eastern Nigeria with 7 siblings and his early life was defined by the Biafran civil war which erupted when he was 12. He enlisted in the Biafran military intelligence arm known as ‘the Boys Company’ without telling his parents, but luckily missed his mission rendezvous which failed with horrendous consequences. Nevertheless Ben witnessed the fighting, terror and violence first hand and has experienced being in the line of fire.

This fraught background coloured some of his musical experiences in writing and in performance. Indeed, his music has such power in his native Nigeria that he has even been threatened not to play “Raise your Conscience” by a Nigerian military general and has had tanks at one of his gigs in Apartheid South Africa.

His music carries messages relating to these experiences and each one tells a fascinating story. It is for this reason that his music has received praise from the likes of Chris Rea, Bono and BBC Radio 2 DJ Simon Mayo and he has played at Glastonbury Festival, the Cambridge Folk Festival and the World Music Festival in Copenhagen.

Due to his political background Ben has also had the privilege to play at high profile events to influential world leaders such as Archbishop Rowan Williams and Gordon Brown at the Lambeth Conference in 2008, at the ‘Make Poverty History’ Gleneagles Summit and at a Commonwealth leader’s summit with HM the Queen and Prince Philip. He is therefore used to gaining a great deal of attention through his music, he sees his art and art in general as a way of influencing people to do good in the world.  He currently runs a charity called ‘Amaka Beautiful Child’ (ABC) which is itself committed to ‘social and personal transformation through the arts’. It aims to use poetry, music, art, drama and dance (all interests of Ben’s) for the sake of social cohesion in order to bring communities together. Ben has been busy working on a number of projects such as the empowerment of young refugees, a campaign to make primary education free for all children globally (UN development goal for 2015), and the creation of a physical space for sociological artistic expression in his home town of Great Malvern.

Ben’s range of life experiences has provided him with some rich insight into the world around him. His albums like ‘Thing with War’ (2003) and ‘Child of Biafra’ (2007) investigate some of the effects of war and express Ben’s own experiences of conflict and violence. Whereas some of his other records such as ‘Nkiru’ (1989) and his most recent album, ‘Diverted Traffic’ (2009) delve more broadly into the human condition, self-identity, and the potential conflicts between artistic expression and a market centred music industry.

In early 2010, Ben’s youngest child was born which naturally took priority and caused him to take some time out from the industry. This didn’t stop him from continuing to write new music that will be recorded later this year for his new album. Overall, there is no doubt that Ben Okafor is a fascinating musical talent with a rich personal history. Together these two facets of talent and wisdom make for quite a special listen.

Derek Ryan: Singing Sensation Releases Brand New Single ‘100 Numbers!’

Uncategorized

Irish country star set to release his new single in the UK on 24th March taken from new album ‘Country Soul’, out now

Image

Derek Ryan’s career has already been an unquestionable success. He signed to WarnerMusic at the age of 17 with his band D-Side and went on to make a multi-platinum selling record with ‘Real World’. He has also been nominated for several Meteor Awards in Ireland and has had global success with a number 1 single in Japan. Derek has also already managed to gain 3 top 10 hits in the UK, and is now looking to further establish himself  with the release of his new single ‘100 Numbers’ following the UK release of his new album Country Soul.

He commands a very loyal following of fans who have known and loved him since his D-Side days! The ‘Official Derek Ryan Fanclub’ Facebook is constantly buzzing with praise and love for Derek, along with a vibrant Twitter feed which keeps his fans hooked on his new gigs and music.

Twitter: https://twitter.com/derekryanmusic

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/derekryanfanclubofficial

The track itself is a clear nod to his Irish country and folk music roots but also has an unmistakeable pop tone too with a very hooky melody and a catchy rhythm that is hard to shake!

Listen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_48VtJ4sjg

‘100 Numbers’ was, like most of Ryan’s music, self-penned. The lyrics speak of being surrounded by people once he’d moved to London to continue his career, but still suffering from homesickness and missing those he is closest to. It was inspired by a tough time in his life when he was living in a bedsit in the city and desperately wanted to get back to his home in Ireland and continue making the music which he loves and has grown up with.

These feelings came despite the ‘100 Numbers’ in his phone, and there was no one who could help him shake his thoughts of home. The song is therefore a look into Derek’s own journey out of loneliness and back to his roots both musically and personally.

Musically ‘100 Numbers’ is quite layered with a number of different instruments being used throughout to give it a warmth characteristic of Derek’s music. In terms of comparison, the Westlife pop style is tempting but it has a more contemporary Mumford and Sons, Laura Marling pop folk feel to it whilst retaining a traditional flavour.

‘CRYING DAYS’ ARE OVER WITH RELEASE OF NEW NYIKA SINGLE

Soul

New Single Released 17th January, 2014

NyikaNyika is a soul funk singer songwriter with Bulgarian and Zimbabwean roots. She has a sound which is reminiscent of other soul acts, such as Omar (both artists having studied at WAC). Being a self managed and published artist, Nyika is indie in the truest sense of the word. In addition, this staunchly independent artist also runs her own record label Too Hip Records. This independence allows Nyika to release music that is unfiltered, personal and direct. This personal approach is reflected in new single ‘Crying Days’, which focuses on her childhood.

Nyika is not complacent and continues to grow as an artist. She has already released two albums which have allowed her to work with some of the same collaborators as George Michael, Dusty Springfield and Kylie Minogue. All of the knowledge she has gained from her previous collaborations have helped to shape ‘Crying Days’.

Having performed at London Gay Pride and being labeled as ‘One to watch’ by Tony Blackburn (BBC Radio), momentum is really building for Nyika. Listening to ‘Crying Days’, it’s clear to see why. The track is a triumphant statement about overcoming past strife and how this ultimately strengthens us.  This is all made clear in the chorus, which proudly states ‘My crying days are over’.

This uplifting message is backed by thudding drums, giving the song a real energy and forward propulsion. This energy permeates the entire song and makes for an exciting listen. This backing is built on by soulful piano chords and funk guitar. If you’ve not listened to Nyika before, ‘Crying Days’ is a great introduction to her indie soul funk style.

‘Crying Days’ will be available for purchase from January 17th.
